EEEK! A GHOST!

Some call them sugar ants, others call them pests, we call them ghost ants. No matter what you refer to them as, we all consider them to be a nuisance. So with Halloween around the corner, we find it appropriate to blog about them.

Here in FL, ghost ants are a very common household pest dating back as early as 1988. Within the last 15 years or so, they have elevated in status from just a household pest to a major pest problem and are most commonly found in warm and tropical climates. These unwelcome, trick or treaters have become well established in Florida, Hawaii, and Texas.

Ghost ants are small in size (less than 1/16 of an inch long) and they do not bite or sting. Their ghostly appearance on dark surfaces is due to their opaque abdomen and legs and their dark brown head and thorax.

Ghost ants are small enough to enter through the tiniest holes and cracks in caulking and foundations or from shrubs, plants, and/or tree limbs touching the home.

Outdoors, these ants can be found in mulch, the base of palm fronds, under loose bark, plant stems, in hollow supports for pool enclosures and screened porches, or clumps of moist, dead grass, just to name a few. So, the first step in prevention outdoors is to trim landscaping and trees to keep limbs from touching the home or business and repair any leaky hoses, roofing, or plumbing.

Indoors, they will colonize in baseboards, wall voids, potted plants, spaces between cabinets. Once they have found their way inside, they can be found trailing to and from sinks/bathtubs in search of moisture. The best way to control these little pests indoors is cleanliness. Keep food sealed in air tight containers, wipe up any spills or crumbs immediately, and reduce moisture sources such as plumbing leaks and condensation.
Control is normally not necessary except when the ghost ants become a nuisance. If your home is being over-run with these little demons give Acme a call. We can provide a price over the phone and peace of mind that your home can once again be ghost (ant) free.

Congratulations to our son, Chance and his new wife, Lindsay on their recent marriage!!

They got married on May 14, 2011 on Turtle Beach in Siesta Key, FL. Their beach wedding was beautiful with bright, summer colors of tangelo and fuchsia. We were a little concerned about the weather that afternoon, but the sun came out minutes before the ceremony.

Lindsay & Chance are both employed here at Acme Termite & Pest Control. Lindsay has been our Route Manager for the last 2 years. Chance has been our Service Technician for the past 8 years and has also been helping his father, Gamble out with Termite Inspections for almost 3 years.

Congrats, Chance & Lindsay! We wish you nothing but the best. We welcome Lindsay into our family with open arms.

Acme Termite & Pest Control throws out a big giant thanks a hell of a lot Mr. semi trucker dude! That is...for loosing a sheet of ice from your rig which smashed our company truck window in, dented our hood, broke our wind shield wiper, etc....not to mention scare the CRAP out of poor Tyler, our driver. Who was, luckily, uninjured.

Roasted Pineapple & Habanero Dip

Happy Cinco De Mayo Day !
Doing anything special to celebrate? Bradenton is having a Cinco De Mayo celebration downtown by the waterfront tonight. They will have all the fun fixin's...food, beer and music. As much as we would like to go, we will be at home tonight instead, celebrating with our home-made tacos. Yum.
We recently stopped by a new place. From the outside we weren't quite sure what to expect. It appeared to be a Hispanic grocery store and bakery. We decided to experiment and go inside to check it out. Walking in the doors of the bakery we were met with the best bakery smell you could ever imagine. The place was buzzin' with people and the racks were loaded with breads, donuts, cookies, flans and other yummy things. All the goodies were huge-most as big as your hand and you could watch as they pulled the pans out of the ovens. We walked out with a large sack full of things that we still can't pronounce and didn't spend a lot of money. We enjoyed sampling each baked good and will definitely be going back again. If you live in the Bradenton area stop by Acapulco Tropical sometime. The grocery store located next door is an interesting place too. The store is packed full and includes a deli and prepared food area. We haven't ate there, but after reading the reviews, might have to try it out.

Taco Soup

We tried a new recipe lately that our family really enjoyed. Several people have asked us to share the recipe so here it is. It is for TACO SOUP. I know...at first it may not sound all that pleasing, but if you love tacos like Gamble and I do, then it is atleast worth a try. I made a few slight revisions but the original recipee can be seen at Sparkpeople.com. It is very simple and doesn't take long to throw together.

Ingredients

1 Lb. lean ground beef

1 1/2 cups yellow onion, chopped

1 packet of seasoning mix OR 3 Tbl chilli powder, 1 tsp red pepper flakes, 1 tsp cumin

4-6 cloves of garlic pressed or minced

3 oz. Goya Sofrito tomato cooking base (Mexican tomato paste)

10 oz. Rotel diced tomatoes with green chillies (hot) -do not drain

16 oz can of kidney beans, dark, drained

1 cup water (adjust to preference)

1 cup frozen corn

1 med. size hot pepper (jalepeno or type of your choice depending on amount of heat preferred)-diced -or- 4 oz canned green chilies

1/2 cup garbanzo beans (from can)-smashed or mushed in food processor

Toppings for garnish (fresh cilantro, cheese, sour cream & chips)

Directions
Brown ground beef and 1 cup of chopped onion over medium heat in a heavy soup pot, stirring occasionally. Drain mixture and blot away excess grease. Add spices and garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add Goya tomato paste and cook additional minute while stirring. Add diced tomatoes, kidney beans and water. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add green chilies (reserving some for garnish), mashed garbanzo beans then corn. Simmer additional 10-15 minutes. More water may be added to thin the soup or add more smashed garbanzo beans to thicken.

Garnish with chopped cilantro, jalepeno pepper, remaining 1/2 cup of onion, cheese, sour cream and chips.

Kudos to our dad (Bob Tetzlaff) who has retired from the Belleville, Ill. Post Office after 45 years on the job.  The local news paper interviewed him and you can read the article here.

We have been teasing him for years that he will still be working when we are all old enough to retire.  I guess he had to prove us wrong.  LOL.

Since we live in Florida we missed his retirement party, but I'm sure everyone had a great time. 

We are happy for him and wish him a relaxing, healthy and fun retirement with a very short honey-do list.  

PS...It's about damn time Daddy!!!

Heavy Hearts

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to Tyler, Marshall and the entire Ferguson family. They have lost their mother this weekend after a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). ALS is one of those very unfair diseases. The brothers are employed by Acme and specialize in Whole Home No-Tent treatments. We are very proud of these two wonderful young men and the courage they have each shown during this extremely hard time in their lives.

Getting There

Are you getting ready yet for the holidays? We had some cooler weather in Florida and took advantage of it by bringing home and setting up the tree. It is always more enjoyable decorating when its not 90 degrees outside. lol

As you prepare your home for the holidays don't put your pets in harms way. Remember that some plants, common cleaning products or prescription medication can be poisonous to your furry friends. While things are hectic around the home and new guests may be staying with you it can be easy to overlook the dangers. Keep in mind that Christmas tree water may contain fertilizer or bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal upset. Electrical cords, batteries, glass ornaments and our own special treats need to be considered, as well as, ribbons and tinsel which can become lodged in the intestines (mostly in felines). For their sake {and your sanity!} keep a list of emergency numbers on hand...just in case. If you live in the Manatee/Sarasota, Fl. area here are some numbers.

We have had some fantastic Halloween parties in the past. I have fond memories of the adults taking our kids around to trick or treat in 40 degree weather all bundled up...some years we even had snow already. It was cold but fun. Of course we don't have that problem here in Florida. Instead, we have to wait until the day before to put our carved pumpkins outside, otherwise they turn to goo by the special night. Ewwwwww.

This year we are gathering at Billie and Jeff's for a Rock-Star themed party. Rock star costumes are required and a Guitar Hero competition will be taking place. Yeah, that ought to be interesting & fun.

OMG!!!!!! What a night!

How crazy is that? Both of our kids were in seperate vehicle accidents on Thursday within 1 hour of each other. Thankfully-both are ok!

Brianna's school bus clipped a car turning a corner. The kids aboard the bus weren't near as shaken about the incident as they were the very upset, vocally loud person getting out of the car that the bus hit. After about a 1 1/2 hour delay, she made it back home.

1 hour later Chance was T-Boned in the drivers side of his Acme truck a few blocks away from the office. The blow spun the truck into a light pole and bouncing sideways down the side walk. He is alright...but the truck on the other hand.....

Ever Changing

If you live nearby or visit often enough, you already know that the Gulf waters are constantly ever-changing, just as life is for us, as well. Some days the water is so clear you can see the bottom, beautiful shells to be found, interesting beauties of nature like star fish and sea horses, and yet other days the water can be murky or filled with sea weed. Some days the water and under toe can be very rough and dangerous or occasionally almost as smooth as a lake. The waters can hold dangers like jelly fish or in a far distance a sting ray, dolphins playing innocently or maybe even a fin of a shark can be seen.

As in life, the easy times and rough ones, the pretty things and ugly ones, the safe moments and possibilities of danger..we all deal with them . As life under the water, some are more pleasant and enjoyable than others, but all necessary.

This past Sunday we had an amazing experience. Gamble, my mother and I were out on the sandbar floating in waist deep water, a couple of feet away from each other, chatting when we noticed a giant dark mass coming towards us. It startled us at first because of all the possibilities that it could be. Then Gamble noticed the characteristic aspects of it-the shape of the body, the rounded back fin, he knew it was a manatee. We thought it would see us and go around or shift direction, but instead it swam right between us. Gamble reached down and petted it as it slowly swam by. It was something very special for us to experience.

If you don't know a lot about manatees they are interesting creatures. You can learn more about them here and read about Snooty who just celebrated his 61st birthday. He lives in Bradenton and you can go visit him daily. It is fun to watch the handlers feed him. They are very gentle but big, not necessarily the prettiest thing that you have ever seen (after all they are also called the sea cow), but they still hold that puppy dog kind of face--at least I think so.

Here, in Bradenton Florida, we are limited with the fireworks that are legal to set off. Nothing like the crazy stuff that we have bought and set off years ago. The news man was teasing the other day that practically the only thing legal is sparklers. But actually, I have seen more people get seriously hurt with those than with the larger, exploding fireworks. Go figure.

Dog Days

The "dog-days" of summer have definitely arrived here in Florida. We took a day this past weekend to take the kids (the two and the four legged ones) to the beach to play. If you can't tell by their faces...they all had a blast.

It's funny how Banyon (our male Chinook) hates to take a bath, but Loves to play in the water. Nikki, on the other hand, has always loved the water-any kind.

Weird bumpy paper

Embossed wall paper used to be a big thing when I was younger. I thought the bumpy paper was a little weird but couldn't help but touch it. Then it seemed to loose its flair and everyone removed it from their walls. Well, guess what, apparently it is coming back again (as everything always does). Check out this article from BH&G on customizing the accessories around your home (besides your walls). I love the covered boxes and office storage ideas. The lamp shade and bedroom mirror are nice too. I think my daughter would love the window shade and would probably try making a wallet out of the material, to go with her multi compartment, decorated duct-tape wallets (see below) that she has been making. (Ya, I know...don't ask)...they actually look pretty cool are are functional. One has a Velcro closure and the other a ribbon/loop closure.

You've heard of the fairy-tale poem, which is directed at Mary & asking her..what's up with your garden chi ca, how's it grow'in??

Well, I'm working on gettin' me one of those-there gardens too...for the fun of it and hopefully to save a little money, instead of purchasing these things from the grocery store all the time.

So far it is actually going well. And I don't say that in a boastful, bragging way...but instead in an OMG, I'm surprised type of way. The green peppers have started flowering (I can't wait), the rosemary is loving it, the basil and lemon thyme are singing also. I have had some problems with the cilantro and parsley. Something keeps digging them up and I find them bare-root naked laying in the pot, where hours before they were planted. I'm not sure if it is a bird, squirrel or cat..but whatever it is had better watch out! I also have some green onion, sweet basil and about 4 other herbs. I am also trying a tomato plant in an upside down planter. It is growing fast, has 1 baby and 5 or 6 flowers on it. But it has some leaves with a powdery film, so I am a little concerned. Inside I have seeded red, green and hot peppers, which didn't cost a cent. We are using recycled containers and seeds saved from previous veggies. (No sign of life yet). Last night we made our first meal with the herbs. I used the lemon thyme and rosemary on some chicken breasts. They turned out great and the house smelled wonderful with the aromas. I have also planted some lavender. Mark my words, one of these days, I will be running care free in a field of lavender.....of course the field may only be 2'x2',...but I will. Wish me luck

Saying Good-bye

Hello again. I realize (and am ashamed) that it has been since January that I last posted. Although things have been hectic and our days and nights very busy, that is not the reason for my delay. Of course I wasn't totally blog-absent. I have been collecting links, ideas, stories, etc. all this time to share with you. But I was determined for the next blog to be business related and many topics were discussed as options, but the most obvious business news to be discussed was what I was avoiding. So no more avoiding it's time. For anyone following the blog, who doesn't already know, Kenny Ervin has passed away. He was my step dad and business partner. His passing has left a large hole to fill, for many people who knew him. He was highly known and respected in the termite and pest control field, both in Florida and Illinois. His high energy spirit and outgoing personality was unforgettable to all who met him. If you would like to read the obituary, it is available from the Bradenton, Fl. paper or the Belleville, Il. paper, however, they were each entered on line with omissions. So you may want to read both. His loved ones are each handling his passing in their own way, but of course, only time will help heal the ones hurt the most. We appreciate the overwhelming amount of thoughts, prayers and condolences from everyone. The stories that have been shared by those who knew him are priceless and we have enjoyed listening to every one of them. So, while Kenny may have watched his last beach sunset, we will think of him, each time we watch the big fireball go down in the sky.

So here's a question for ya'all. Does anyone have experience with freecycle? I saw an article about 2 years ago from a location in New York (I think), the people went on line, checked it out and got a free bike. They only had a few locations but now there seems to be many. This is how it works..you go to freecycle.org and sign up for the group in your area. You post things that you want to get rid of (for free) and people who live nearby will contact you and come pick it up. You can also post things that you are looking for. Lastly, you can monitor the posts and if you see anything you want, you contact the poster and go pick it up (for free). No money exchanges hands, no spam or advertising is allowed. So far I have seen clothes, playhouses, baby strollers, cribs, etc., set of dishes, microwaves, furniture and so forth. Just wondering if anyone has tried it out and what kind of experience that you had.

Whether you reuse wrap and bowes, buy new each year or you are in the "Green" movement, you'll find some wrapping ideas. My fav's were the paint cans, printing out script font phrases from your computer, and decorating lunch bags. Have a flat bow that won't perk up-BH&G cut the loops and made it look like new. And my final fav-spray paint a leaf and use instead of a bow.

Glittery Snowman Gift Tag

When my kids were little we would make a special craft project every year right before Christmas which we would give as gifts to our families. Normally they were ornaments (wire craft with beads, snowmen in clear globes or old Christmas card/patch work stars), all to hang from someones tree. My husband and I enjoyed the time together watching the kids (and ourselves) create these magical pieces, and we hope everyone enjoyed receiving them as well. These days it seems a bit more difficult to find the time to do that but these tags would certainly have made the list.

I LOVE Christmas! I love everything about it. The sights, sounds, tastes and smells of it. And of course, I decorate. Sometimes even a little too much perhaps, but...so what! I realize it is belated, but I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and were able to share it with loved ones. We had a very unusual Thanksgiving at our home. For the first time ever, we had Gamble's parents and my parents at our house at the same time. The In-laws live in Illinois and have been down visiting. Including the kids we had 8 people at the table. We missed not having Bee-Wee and Ffej over (they were up North for the holiday). Considering the health complications that some of our parents are facing recently, I had an overwhelming feeling of Thankfulness to have them all here sharing the evening with us. It was truly a wonderful evening.

I'm Back - (They're Gone)

Well folks, I sincerely apologize for dropping off the face of the earth and my ultimate failure to provide any interaction at all on my (or anyone Else's blog) for the past month or so. Things have been a bit at odds lately. On the top of the list is the In-Laws have been in town for the past month staying with us. Now let me elaborate slightly...by "with us" I mean at our house, which is considerably small, not enough bedrooms for everyone and only one ...I'll repeat...one bathroom. Anyone relate?? Considering the tight quarters, early mornings and busy schedules..oh-and half the house hold with an extremely nagging cough and cold--I think we have managed our way thru the past 4 weeks quite well. Each year they come to visit and we cram as much sight seeing, beach walking, etc. into the time as we can. They are leaving bright and early tomorrow morning, so I expect life to get slightly closer to "back to normal" soon...of course then there is Christmas coming..and New Years..and.......

One topic that I enjoy reading and sharing thoughts about is what everyone is doing during the changing economic times to keep up their households and lifestyles. I admit it....I have become a coupon, rebate and sale watcher. I always shrugged my face at the thought in the past, maybe keeping a great coupon now and then, but normally loosing it or forgetting to take it with us to the store. I have thrown away so many coupons that expired 8 months prior, that it seemed pointless to even attempt saving with coupons. But that has changed. I'm sure you have heard the scenarios of a woman walking into a grocery store and coming out with 2 carts of stuff and paying only $2.00 for it all. Well, I'm not a person to that extent. Between running the business, and household, I don't have the time (or the energy) to be bouncing around to 10 different stores to buy only a few on sale items and using coupons good for that day only, several times a week. But one thing that I have started doing is keeping a much closer eye on the drug store for coupons, rebates and special sales. For instance, this weekend I did make a special trip to buy 2 bottles of Nature Made Cranberry pills. My daughter and I both use them, so it is an item we would need to purchase soon anyway. Walgreens had a sale- buy 1 get 1 free, and on the Nature Made website they had a $2.00 off coupon. So, normally 2 bottles would have cost $16.98, but after their sale and my coupon, I was able to get them for $6.49 (that's a savings of $10.49). I also picked up 4 bars of Rocky Road candy bars---If you haven't tried them-you have to (especially the milk chocolate) Yumm!. I found $3.00 off 2 coupons in the rebate book. They are $1.99 each minus the coupons meant I spent $1.96 for all 4. I wouldn't normally spend $1.99 on a single candy bar, but these are great and with the coupon, very affordable. I will write more about what we are doing to save money...let me know your thoughts or ideas too.
